  FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The study of a foreign language is an important component in a well-rounded college preparatory program. A minimum of two (2) units of the same language is required for admission to every state-supported four-year college or university in South Carolina. Many colleges and universities, including Clemson, require three (3) units of foreign language study. For this reason, and since most colleges and universities require that students take a foreign language placement test, it is highly recommended that students preparing for a four-year college either follow a three to five unit sequence. Students who plan to take only the required two units should begin in the 10th or 11th grade. Entering college freshmen are required to take a foreign language placement examination, which determines whether college credit is awarded and at what level the student should be placed. It is important that the students be enrolled in foreign language during their final years of high school if they plan to enter a four-year college or university after graduation from High School.
